Now, your counselings are all done well and it is nearing time to write the NCOER, what resources do you need to use? First, you need to check AR 623-3 (updated 2015), to ensure you are meeting all the requirements, such as giving the proper type of NCOER, the rating chain is good, etc. Don't just copy and paste some shit to check the block and keep 1SG off of your ass. Cover their day to day tasks, what they have accomplished, what they need to work on, etc. There doesn’t necessarily have to be any major events during that quarter. This means that you actually have to put some thought into your counselings and actually address what they have done. If you are keeping up with counseling and doing it well, then the NCOER will write itself. Not only are you not providing clear guidance to your subordinate, you are setting yourself and that NCO up for failure when it comes time for his NCOER to be written. If you are not counseling your NCO's on at least a quarterly basis like you are required to, then you are fucked up.
